The Reading and Writing Room

“Most of the basic material a writer works with is acquired before the age of fifteen.” Willa Cather

So You Want To Be A Great Reader…

1. Read every day. Read all kinds of things like novels, biographies, poems, short stories, graphic novels, non-fiction books filled with amazing photographs of your topic, magazines and newspapers. Hey–read some blogs while you’re at it!

2. Practice reading out loud to your siblings, your parents, your friends or even just to yourself. Pay attention to punctuation, use tones of voice and expression which match with the text you’re reading. Try on some different accents, too.

3. Read book reviews and talk to friends to find out about books you might want to read. Don’t be afraid to put down a book you’re not enjoying, as long as you’ve given it a good try first.

4. Tell everyone you know that you finished a book and give them your opinion on it. The more we talk about what we learn, the better able we will be to write about it. Talk about it, write about it on our blog or publish a review on a website.
